OK, this post is a bit of a request. You see, I'm somewhat growing tired of the music I've been listening to lately, and I've been itching to hear something new. However, I'm not quite sure what's out there, so I was hoping that you, my loyal readers, might suggest some bands that I should check out. I'm also looking for a new filesharing program. Torrents are good and all, but I can't seem to track down that much non-mainstream music just using the piratebay. Are they any good filesharing programs still out there?

What do you like? I've got about 80GB of massively eclectic tunes; I'd be happy to send you a DVD.

Speaking as an obnoxious person with a tremendous love of music, I'd be happy to help you out with recommendations. However, a starting point: what type of music do you prefer?/What bands do you enjoy?

I recently downloaded some Feist and Amy Winehouse. Also the Across the Universe soundtrack. :)

I have an innate aversion to Beatles covers, I just don't like them. Sorry, but the originals are good enough.

Depends what you like, but there is always so much out there. You just can't get it all! My big interests right now is dance mixes and lounge music. I listen to some pretty cool streams at work.

I am making some pathetic effort to expand my tastes in J-Pop. But I hate giving opinions on music, I don't want to quantify or pin down what I like in music, and it's probably vastly different from what you like in music.

I will tell you my favorite J-Pop band nowadays is Do As Infinity.

Well, what kinds of music do you like in the first place? Are you familiar yet with Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier? How about the Bulgarian Women's Choir? mum (I love their Map of the Piano)? B-52s? Are you into bhangra music? How about bhangra remixes? Daler Mendhi's Bhangra Remix is pretty addictive. How about trying some classical guitar pieces? Japanese folk music? Mannheim Steamroller? Killer Clowns from Outer Space (OST)?

I used to go here for free, new music now and then: http://www.ampcast.com . It's a bit of trouble to search, but there's usually some really good stuff around if you're willing to take the time to sample.

Also, if you're not familiar with http://www.ocremix.org , go there.

I also recommend string quartets, They Might Be Giants, and searching through really old retro bands to find something old and new.

My parents have a subscription to Ares, but I don't particularly recommend it, because they want money while also still being totally illegal. I mean, either be free and illegal or be legal and costing, not illegal and costing. WTF. Anyway, yeah, it's okay and useful, but in comparison to what else is probably out there, I would ultimately guess it sucks.

Lemme know if you have some suggestions for the kinds of stuff you like, and I'll send you some better feedback.

Actually, I was looking for something and ran across some music samples: http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:yUWbj2OVk_UJ:odeo.com/channel/67109/feed.xspf+Flight+of+the+Conchords+%22BusinessTime.mp3%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&ie=UTF-8

I really, really liked this one:
http://odeo.com/show/16013743/4/download/CiewMaweleAdhamShaikhsDustyFootRemix.mp3

I think I might get the album. The original's on this: http://www.amazon.com/Tassoumakan-Issa-Bagayogo/dp/B0002IQI10

It's hard to find new sounds that stick out. You have to kind of search and sample. It's like dumpster diving sometimes, trying to find a good song. But worth it, especially if you can find an artist you like.

Try Soulseek -- I've had real good luck with getting non-mainstream stuff there. I also like the journal radio_alouette for world stuff.

Soulseek is awesome for finding music, however, I had to stop using it, because I kept finding mp3s that I had never seen before when I had not really downloaded anything. I do miss it though. And too bad Limewire sucks.

i've never been really big on torrents, and since filesharing hasn't been working as well for me lately i've been using the "blogosphere" (that term... hee), and i've found several good mp3 aggregater sites. for downloading just single mp3s, i recommend elbo.ws or the hype machine (they both appear to be the same thing and have about the same results). you can search by artist to find multiple files by an artist, and since the mp3s tend to be directly linked, you can listen to them beforehand to see if you want to download them. these sites are usually good for getting the singles or most hyped songs, not a whole album tthough.
for albums, i recommend reloda. and if you can't find an album you want on reloda, their search function usually has been helpful in leading me to blogs where i can find what i want.

as far as artists go, i'm not sure exactly what your tastes are, but i've been getting more into siouxsie and the banshees lately (though that'll be harder to find in the web sites i mentioned because it's older). also, someone else mentioned feist, who is also good.
