Well then, it's been a crazy couple of weeks here in South Florida. Sadly, Warspite, my trusty civic, is no more. He rests now in the big scrap heap of the sky. Though he was able to soldier on after the accident, the damage he sustained in the attack was too great to bare and he was scuttled.
But out of all this darkness, there was a spot of brightness. I had kept Warspite in great, like-new condition up the accident. No stains, scratches, no damage or wear anywhere. Because of this I got a rather nice check from my insurance company, enough to cover the majority of a new car. I spent the past couple of weeks shopping around, and ultimately settled on...another civic.
Crazy, I know, but there is simply nothing else that matches it out there. Cheaper cars end up costing the same because of worse fuel efficiency, higher maintenance costs, and worse insurance, while more expensive cars don't add anything worthwhile to me. So, I am now the owner of a new, 2007 Honda Civic LX. It's purdy. Got lots of nice features and tons of safety stuff, and it's only slightly more expensive than my old one. Plus, the engine is a lot stronger, but even more fuel efficient. And, the redesign make it look a lot sleeker. I got it at a great price too, by playing two dealerships off one another and griding down the price to below invoice.
But, there is a bit of a problem. See, Warspite was named such because the coloration resembled battleship gray, but this new car is "Atomic Blue." It's a very nice color, but not becomming of a ship of war. So, what am I supposed to name the thing? Any suggestions?

Well, it's called Atomic Blue, so pick your favorite atom. I nominate Yttrium or Bismuth.

Hmm.... cobalt is a blue-making element, but not original. Cesium also has a blue flame, and Indium is named for indigo...

Yeah, I think there is a Chevy Cobalt already. Cesium and Indium are nice and all, but they don't really have a ring to them.

Is Seaborgium still around or did they vote that name down?

I dearly hope it is.

Cerenkov? Not nearly as sexy as Warspite though.

As in the blue radiation emitted from a nuclear reactor? This is a name to be considered...

That's the stuff. It's a very pretty blue, and the physics behind the phenomenon are pretty interesting (it's sort of a bow shock from beta particles exceeding the speed of light in water).

The only military names that are associated with blue in my mind are the names of WWII naval aircraft, since dark blue or blue and grey were the standard color scheme for them. The Corsair, Wildcat, and Hellcat are the three aircraft I associate most with that color scheme.

Oh, by the way - I'm Hackwolf, pleased to meet you. I've friended you, hope you don't mind, please feel free to reciprocate or not depending on your inclination.

I think it was via the FOAF feature, since we've got both gradstudents and bipolypagangeek in common, but it may have been through a post on one of those two communities as well. Your icon caught my eye, and we seem to have a number of interests in common.

I would say "Fat Man" or "Little Boy", but neither is flattering and one is downright creepy.

Yeah, I think both of those carry some pretty weighty connotations. It feels doubly bad considering the Honda is a Japanese car.

you should consider naming it blade runner.

i don't know how that name came to me, but it just did. it's probably some sort of sign

Blade Runner is a pretty cool name, but it's lacking a link to the color or to military history. It is however, a great movie.

well, i've actually never seen the movie, but if you wanna stretch, i figure 'blade runner' is kind of reminiscent of something that is 'atomic blue' because you imagine something the width of an atom running something the narrow, narrow width of something like a blade that's been forged in super hot fire, which would probably turn blue and then white or something along those lines.

my brain works instinctively sometimes. this is what it has come up with

Cerenkov is nice.

Does it have to be based on the color of the car?
Maybe Nicobolas?

I try to keep the color in mind when I pick out names, though other factors do play a role as well. Been trying to keep on with a military history theme as well.

Well, is it a male car or female car? The personality, I mean. Or am I the only one who bothers with that?

You could name it after a mineral: kyanite, nifty structure to it, and disinctly blue.

Or, you could depart from the blue-ness, and call it Shrike. Shrikes are pretty little predator birds. Shrike makes for a nice unisex vehicle name.

Shrike does have something going for it - it's small, vicious, and agressive, and sounds cool to boot. I did a bit of searching and found out that Shrike was the designation of the A-25, am American WW2 Dive Bomber. It's the army version of the Navy's SBC2 Helldiver, which often did have a blue(ish) coloring as it was a naval aircraft.

you could name it after the fate of its predecessor (or... ahem... predeceassor), put a literary twist on it and call it "snow crash". or go with "Glarblath the Inexorable".

I personal think a starship name would be a good fit, though as for an example I will have to get back to you.
